3. Install the idle adjusting needles
and
springs. Turn the idle adjusting
needles in with
the fingers until they seat, then
back them out one
full turn. Be careful not to force
either needle
against its seat, as this will groove
the tip of the
needle, making it impossible to
correctly adjust
the idle mixture.
1. Fit the piston of the thermostat
lever, link,
and piston assembly into its chamber
in the choke
housing. Install the choke housing
shaft and lever
assembly, guiding the tip of the
shaft into the hole
provided for it in the thermostat
lever. Install
the thermostat lever spacer, lockwasher,
and nut,
in that order.
4. Install the new distributor check
valve and
check valve retainer.
5. Install the choke shaft and the
drum-like
nozzle tube extensions. Be sure
the narrow end
of the egg-shaped hole in each nozzle
tube ex
tension faces toward the fuel inlet
hole in the
throttle body.
6. Install the choke lever and choke
lever
nut and lockwasher.
7. Referring to the lines and numbers
scribed
during disassembly, install the
choke plates with
choke plate screws and lockwashers.
Carefully
check to make sure the choke plates
work freely
and do not rub on the nozzle tube
extensions.
STEPS 8 AND 9 FOLLOWING, APPLY ONLY
TO
THE SPARK VALVE EQUIPPED LINCOLN
CARBURETOR.
8. Using a new adapter body gasket
and a
new adapter body screw gasket, install
the spark
valve adapter body and the adapter
body screw to
the throttle body with Snap-On Tool
No. MC-119.
The adapter body screw should be
tight to prevent
an air leak.
9. Install the spark valve, using
a new spark
valve gasket. The spark valve must
be tightened
securely to prevent any air leak.
STEPS 10 THROUGH 12 FOLLOWING, APPLY
ONLY TO THE DASHPOT EQUIPPED MERCURY
CARBURETOR.
2. Set the choke housing plate
in position and
install the choke housing plate
screw.
3. Set the thermostat housing gasket
in po
sition over the plate, check for
proper alignment
of the slot and all holes in the
gasket and plate,
then install the thermostat housing
and the three
thermostat housing clamps and screws.
Be sure
the bent-in toes of the clamps
are toward the rim
of the thermostat housing, clamping
it securely.
To return the thermostat to the
original factory
setting, align the scribe mark
on the rim of the
thermostat housing with the center
raised index
on the choke housing.
4. A definite resistance should
be felt when
pressing downward on the choke
housing shaft
lever, indicating that the thermostat
lever is
properly engaging the thermostat
spring. If this
is not encountered, loosen the
three clamp screws
slightly and rotate the thermostat
housing one
complete turn in the direction
opposite that in
dicated by the arrow on the thermostat
cover.
Tighten the clamp screws and recheck.
C. Reassembly - Throttle Body -
Governor
Equipped Carburetors
1.
Slip throttle shaft with attached
bearing
into throttle body and install
wire throttle shaft
retainer with bent-in sides of
retainer pressing
against throttle shaft bearing.
10. Place a new dashpot gasket
on the dashpot
and, while depressing the dashpot
lever, slip the
dashpot into position in the throttle
body.
11. Using a new dashpot gasket,
install the
dashpot cap nut. Hold the hex head
dashpot nut
and tighten the dashpot cap nut.
12. Insert the dashpot check valve
spring and
new check valve into the passage
in the throttle
body. Install the dashpot check
valve retainer. In
later model carburetors which have
the check valve
incorporated in the top of the
dashpot itself it is
recommended that the entire dashpot
assembly be
replaced if suspected of not functioning
properly.
B. Reassembly - Automatic Choke
Unit
2. Referring to lines and figures
scribed on
throttle plates and throttle body
during disassembly,
install the two throttle plates,
using four (4) new
throttle plate screws. See figure
52. One of the
throttle plates has a slot in its
edge. This throttle
plate is to be installed in the
throttle bore at the
governor side of the throttle body.
See figure 51.
The slot in the plate must be aligned
with the
small distributor vacuum take-off
hole in the
throttle bore. Install the four
throttle plate screws
snugly, but do not tighten them.
Check throttle
plate operation to be sure it is
free and unre
stricted. With the throttle plates
closed, hold the
throttle body up to the light.
Little or no light
should show between the throttle
plates and the
throttle bore of the carburetor.
If the throttle
