planetary gear sets with a common sun gear to obtain three
forward and one reverse gear ratio.
A sun gear shell fits over the sun gear teeth and is held in
place by two retaining rings. The shell forward outside dia
meter is slotted to engage with slots in the direct clutch out
side diameter. The purpose of this arrangement is to provide a
method of stopping the sun gear by grounding it through the
shell, direct clutch, and intermediate clutch to the trans
mission case. This provides the second gear ratio.
The forward most carrier is called the output carrier and is
splined to the output shaft. The front ring gear for the output
carrier assembly is called the input ring gear and the outside
diameter contains splines for the forward clutch drive plates.
The rear carrier assembly is called the reaction carrier
assembly and has its large diameter splined to the inside dia
meter of the low and reverse clutch plates. The ring gear for
the reaction carrier is called the output ring gear and has the
inside diameter splined to the output shaft.
Speed reduction is accomplished in the compound gearset
as follows: For maximum reduction the forward clutch
